What Ceramic Coating Actually Does

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your vehicle's paint surface, forming a semi-permanent layer that sits on top of your clear coat. Unlike traditional wax, which breaks down within weeks, a properly applied ceramic coating can last for years depending on the product and care routine. The result is a hydrophobic surface that causes water to bead and roll off, taking dirt and contaminants with it. It also delivers meaningful UV resistance, helping to slow oxidation and keep your paint from fading over time.

What Ceramic Coating Cannot Do

It is important to understand what ceramic coating is not: it is not a substitute for paint protection film when it comes to impact resistance or chip prevention. It will not prevent scratches from keys or abrasive contact. What it does exceptionally well is enhance your paint, simplify maintenance, and provide a layer of UV and chemical resistance that wax simply cannot match. What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Appointment

Step One: Surface Preparation

Proper preparation is everything with ceramic coating. Before any product goes on, we perform a paint correction to level the surface and address minor swirl marks and light imperfections. Applying ceramic coating over uneven or contaminated paint locks those imperfections in rather than hiding them. That is why every ceramic package at Lo's starts with a correction step.

Step Two: Application and Cure

Once the surface is prepped, the coating is applied in a controlled environment and allowed to cure. After the cure window, maintenance is simple: wash regularly with pH-neutral soap, avoid automatic car washes with brushes, and your coating will continue performing at a high level for years.

Step Three: Pair It With Paint Protection Film

Ceramic coating pairs exceptionally well with paint protection film. Many of our clients choose to install PPF on high-impact zones first and then apply a ceramic coating over the entire vehicle, including over the film, to maximize both appearance and durability in a single system.

  • How long does ceramic coating last?

    Longevity depends on the product and how the vehicle is maintained. Our Gold Package coating is designed for multi-year performance when cared for properly. Following a proper maintenance routine, including regular pH- neutral washes and annual inspections, is the best way to extend the life of your coating.

  • Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?

    Ceramic coating adds hardness to your paint surface and can help resist minor surface marring, but it is not designed to prevent scratches from keys, rocks, or abrasive contact. For that level of physical impact resistance, paint protection film is the right solution. Ceramic coating and PPF are often combined to get the best of both.

  • Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?

    Every ceramic package at Lo's includes a paint correction step for this -eason. Coating over imperfect paint will lock those flaws in. Correction ensures you are starting with a clean, smooth surface that lets the coating bond properly and look its best.

  • Will ceramic coating make my car easier to wash?

    The hydrophobic properties of ceramic coating cause water and contaminants to bead and roll off rather than bond to the surface. This makes routine washes quicker and helps your car stay cleaner between washes.

  • Can ceramic coating be applied over paint protection film?

    Yes, and we recommend it. Applying a dedicated PPF ceramic coating like Gtechniq Halo over your film adds hydrophobic performance and helps the film stay cleaner and clearer over time. It is an excellent add-on for any PPF installation.
